In its classical form particle image velocimetry (PIV) extracts two components of the flow velocity vector by measuring the displacement of tracer particles within a double-pulsed laser light sheet. The method described in this paper is based on the additional recording of a third exposure of the tracer particles in a parallel light sheet, which is slightly displaced with respect to the first one. The particle images resulting from these three exposures are stored on separate frames. The locations of the correlation peaks, as obtained by cross-correlation methods, are used to determine the projections of the velocity vectors onto the plane between the two light sheets. The amplitudes of these peaks are used to obtain information about the velocity component perpendicular to the light-sheet planes. The mathematical background of this method is described. Numerical simulations show the influence of the main parameters (e.g., light-sheet thickness, light-sheet displacement and out-of-plane flow component) on the resolution and reliability of the new method. A new recording procedure and its results will be shown to demonstrate the ease of operation when applying this technique to liquid flows. © 1996 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Fluid Dynamics Investigation of a GDI Fuel Spray by Particle Image Velocimetry

In this work, result of experimental investigation on interaction of fuel spray generated by a swirled type injector, with air motion in a prototype cylinder are presented. Experiments were carried out by planar imaging and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques in order to provide information about the spray structure evolution and instantaneous velocity distribution of air motion and ...

Comparisons of Experimental and Simulated Velocity Fields in Membrane Module Spacers

Spacers are used in spiral wound and plate and frame membrane modules to create flow channels between adjacent membrane layers and mix fluid within the flow channel. Flow through the spacer has a significant beneficial impact on mixing and resulting mass transfer rates but is accompanied by an undesirable increase in pressure drop. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a common tool used to eva...

Heat Transfer Enhancement of a Flat Plate Boundary Layer Distributed by a Square Cylinder: Particle Image Velocimetry and Temperature-Sensitive Paint Measurements and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Analysis

The current empirical study was conducted to investigate the wall neighborhood impact on the two-dimensional flow structure and heat transfer enhancement behind a square cylinder. The low- velocity open-circle wind tunnel was used to carry out the study tests considering the cylinder diameter (D)-based Reynolds number (ReD) of 5130. The selected items to compare were different gap he...

Comparison of Piv Measurements and a Discrete Particle Model in a Rectangular 3d Spout-fluid Bed

Particle image velocimetry and a 3D hard sphere discrete particle model were applied to determine particle velocity profiles in the plane around a spout in a spoutfluid bed for various initial bed heights, spout and background fluidization velocities. Comparison between experimental and numerical results revealed that the particle velocities are underestimated by particle image velocimetry, whi...

Statistical Reconstruction of Velocity Profiles for Nanoparticle Image Velocimetry

Velocities and Brownian effects at nanoscales near channel walls can be measured experimentally in an image plane parallel to the wall by evanescent wave illumination techniques [R. Sadr, M. Yoda, Z. Assuming mobility of spherical particles dominated by hydrodynam...
